What is Jali Furniture?
Jali is a style of design using a latticed screen usually with an ornate geometric pattern often found in Indian furniture and architecture. In our case, the term Jali refers to the beautiful lattice work found on many pieces of Indian sheesham and acacia wood furniture.
Jali furniture designs are usually made from hand-wrought iron such as those found in the Kalanpur, Rajasthani and Kheri ranges but are sometimes made from wooden slats, as seen in the Maharani range and feature differing patterns from a simple crossed mesh pattern to far more intricate work such as the “capsule” pattern popular in many Jali ranges. Jali furniture also often features heavy wrought iron bracing and intricate carvings.

Hardwood Jali Furniture in your Home
Congratulations, you’ve made the decision to furnish your home in beautiful Jali hardwood furniture. This is a decision you will not regret.
Before you buy your new Jali hardwood furniture, it is important to be mindful of a few points about the proper care and use of hardwood furniture in the home.
As hardwoods are a natural material, you may notice small defects such as knots or cracks in the delivered item. This is a perfectly natural occurrence and only adds to the charm and individuality of the piece, ensuring that no two items are ever identical. This individuality is the very reason many people choose to furnish their home in solid wood.
Another factor which will affect your furniture is moisture. Even though most cabinet timbers are kiln dried before being used, the wood will still continue to expand and contract due to changes in humidity. There are ways in which furniture makers relieve or fight against this expansion: Regular protection from the elements with a natural product such as Beeswax or Danish Oil helps to prevent the drying and splitting of hardwoods in changing humidity. Solidly constructed joints such as dovetail or mortice and tenon joints not only hold the wood together firmly and are often decorative, but also serve to allow for the natural movement of the wood.
Furniture made of glass or man made boards simply cannot compare to the warmth and solidity of a piece made from solid hardwood. Provided your furniture is cared for, it will usually last a lifetime and will often outlive its owner and go on to provide joy to future generations as a treasured heirloom.
Caring For Your Jali Furniture
Most of the furniture we feature at Jali furniture has a hand waxed finish. Every three to four months you should re-wax each piece of furniture using a soft cloth and a good quality beeswax polish, preferably creamed beeswax. Taking a clean, soft cloth, apply beeswax polish sparingly to the entire surface of the piece, always working with (in the direction of) the grain. Once a thin, even coat is applied to the entire piece, take another clean cloth and gently buff the surface to the desired level of shine, again in the direction of the grain. Never use silicone based spray polishes such as Mr Sheen as these can cause the wood to dry out and discolour.
Spills & Stains
Sheesham and acacia timbers are extremely hard wearing, however it is always advisable to use coasters and place mats to protect your furniture as hot or damp items may cause staining or marking. Any spills should be cleaned up immediately with a dry or barely damp cloth as moisture left in contact with the surface can cause the wood grain to swell. The beauty of solid wood furniture is that it can be sanded and re-finished should any severe marking occur. Simply sand gently in the direction of the grain with fine sandpaper or wire wool. The furniture can then be refinished with beeswax.
Positioning Jali Furniture
Always try to position your Jali furniture away from sources of direct heat and sunlight when possible. Sunlight can cause the colour of the wood to fade, leaving unsightly differences between sides in the shade and sides which are exposed. Also, try not to place your furniture near a radiator as the sudden changes in temperature can cause the wood to dry out and crack, doors/drawers to jam or for joints to become loose.
The furniture you buy for your home is a major investment and Jali furniture, like any item of solid hardwood furniture, with a little looking after, will become a prized heirloom which will be passed on for generations.
